Goodbye Summer; Hello, New Grass!
The end of summer in the Brookfield, WI, area means different things to different people. For some, the season’s passing is symbolic; for others, it’s the start of school and a set of different daily routines.
If you’re a homeowner in Elm Grove (or nearby) with dead or bare patches in your lawn, it’s prime time to grow new grass.
The first two weeks of September are the best window of the year for grass seeding. Days are still warm but nights are cooling – the perfect scenario to get new grass growing.
There’s more involved than just the morning dew and daylight sun, though. Trees haven’t yet shed their leaves. Once leaves begin covering the ground, they create a physical barrier for vital sunlight and water to reach newly-seeded areas. In other words, don’t wait!
If you want to grow strong, healthy grass, prepare for some work. The “lawn patch” kits you see in stores might seem easy, but these “all-in-one” blends often contain little grass seed and lots of shredded paper. Convenient? Yes. Results? Not so much.
Those bare or dead spots in your New Berlin lawn won’t fill in by themselves. Get out now and buy grass seed (ideally a rye, fescue and bluegrass mix), starter fertilizer and some topsoil. Start raking thatch from dead grass. The best growing time of the year is near, but it won’t last long.
Next week we’ll provide step-by-step instructions for growing that coveted new grass. Be ready!
